About

Jeanne Wherrett pictureJeanne Wherrett is a retired Special Education and English as a Second Language teacher. For the past 30+ years she has been developing books, games and computer programs to help children learn to read and spell successfully. At first this was for her students, later also for her grandchildren. Children are always happy to play games and use a computer.

Phonics is the key. When she started developing resources to help children learn to read and spell, phonics was out of favour. It was considered to be boring and unnecessary. But phonics is fun, or it can be. And it is essential.

She designed everything so that parents can help their children learn to read. You don’t have to be an expert, you just have to have time to spend with them. The Gilead® Success with Reading Programs can also be used in school to supplement any reading program.

From 2013 to 22 she has reworked programs to make one that is logical, sequential, (almost) solely phonics and easy to see where to go next – Gilead® Success with Phonics.

Older students who are struggling with reading and/or spelling are often discouraged and don’t want to read. She has included some simple computer games to engage and help them in areas that often cause difficulty. There are also interactive books that are interesting and/or humorous. Everything is recorded so that they can be independent in improving their skills. The Gilead® Success with Reading Program, Part 2.

2020 also saw the completion of the long-awaited Gilead®Success with Maths.

She has always tried to keep prices low so that anyone who needs her work can afford it.

“Gilead” is featured in the old African-American spiritual, “There is a balm in Gilead”. It comes from the reference in the Bible to Gilead, a region that produced a balm for healing. Children who struggle with reading, spelling and maths certainly need a balm for healing. It is now a registered trade mark in Australia, New Zealand, UK and US.
