Videos to Teach Reading Level 1_1

by Jeanne on 3 June 2014

93 2009 Franklin respite 20To honour my mum who would have been 99 today. She always gave generously of her time and resources to encourage young people in their education.

Here is the first in a series of free videos, and the accompanying books to print. I hope these will help any parent, or other caring adult, with a computer and a reasonable internet connection to be able to help a child learn to read successfully.

Use lots of ways to teach and practise each letter – look at it, say it, trace and/or write it (see letters-directions1.pdf), find words that start with the sound, say the rhyme, do the action (or make up your own), and anything else that you can dream up.

Use the letter cards to play matching games or make words. (See start-phonics-free)

Remember to only talk about the sound of each letter, not its name until much later. This makes it much easier for children to learn to blend the sounds together to make words.

Click on the bottom right hand corner of each video to see it full screen.
