How to teach phonics in a way that kids love and learn – reading comprehension.

level 1_4 Gilead Success with PhonicsSome ideas for extending vocabulary and general knowledge – always talk about the meaning of words that are new to your child, e.g. nativity, didgeridoo … as well as anything that might be interesting, new or unfamiliar.

What is the nurse doing? Why?

When do baby birds get their feathers?

How can he keep playing the didgeridoo for so long? (Circular breathing.) Who would usually play a didgeridoo? When and where?

A trip to the library to find answers, or research more about an interesting topic, is always very valuable.

Humour is a powerful tool. Phonic Comic 1/4 is a true story from my childhood. If you pause the video and talk about what might happen next before going on to the next page, it makes it much more like using the original interactive computer program.

“What might happen next?” is an important question to ask because it helps develop reading comprehension.

Developing vocabulary, general knowledge and reading comprehension all support each other.

Also, learn upper and lowercase “d” and a memory aid for checking “b” and “d” to help with b/d confusion.
