Continuing the series of videos on how to teach phonics successfully – engagement, multisensory learning of letters, blending, vocabulary development and a simple spelling rule.
A multisensory strategy helps children learn letters. This is particularly important for a child who struggles with reading. Associating the sound, writing and/or tracing the letter, making the shape of the letter with his body and engaging with interesting videos and/or photos depicting words starting with the letter, all reinforce each other. Then practise blending these letters together to read and make words with books, letter cards, writing …
The simple spelling rule “Use ‘ss’ or ‘ck’ after a single vowel in a short word,” is helpful. E.g. kiss, miss, lick, kick, cross … Print the Phonic Comic 1/10 book to practise left-to-right blending of sounds to make words – kick, miss, hit, cross.
