How to teach phonics in a way that kids love and learn – review letters, games, high frequency words.
Keep practising new letters as your child learns them, e.g. “p”. Use the memory aids as needed.
Remember to adapt any ideas that you come across to use material that you have available. Have your child keep adding to his collection of letters. Use them to make words. Are they real words or nonsense words? (Note, “wrap” and “rap” are both real words – homophones – words that sound the same but are spelled differently.)
Play bingo with the letters that your child has learned. Draw a grid for each player on paper and pull letter cards from a hat. Try using cashews, almonds … (assuming no allergies) or small pieces of dried fruit instead of counters. Everyone eats their “counters” when someone gets a row or fills their card. Remember to avoid sugar and colouring – no lollies/sweets/candy as rewards.
Many reading programs teach common, high frequency words as sight words. This can lead to reading difficulties later if children learn to guess and/or have to try to remember an increasing number of words by rote.
However, they do need to practise common words to increase their speed and fluency when reading. If the words only contain letters and sounds that they know and they are encouraged to gradually increase speed and fluency (no guessing), it is much better.
