Confusing Letters, Practise and No Guessing

confusing letters It is important to check that children can read the words from the Phonic Comic books without help from the pictures. If children learn to rely on guessing words from the pictures, they will find it very hard when there are no pictures to use. Pause the video before the answers are given, or write the words on cards, to check. (video 1, part  2)

Confusing letters, usually confusing the name and the sound of letters, is a very common reason that children misread words. Make up games to play that use the most common sound, not the name, of the letters that often cause problems – a, e, i, o, u, c, g, q, w, y. Use the consonant sound for “y” – /y/ in yes, not its vowel sounds in happy or sky. Snap is a good game for this, or the less stressful version where the person who puts down the matching card takes the pack. (video 2)

Try making up a bingo game to practise the most common sound of letters. Choose some letters that your child finds easy and two or three that are difficult. (video 3)

Adapt, adapt, adapt … Print the Talking Letters cards back-to-back and cut them out. Choose a few cards, look at the picture, write the word, then turn the card over to check the answer. If necessary, look at the word first, then turn the card back to the picture to write the word. Or use small letter cards for this activity instead of writing. Remember to underline the letters to avoid confusion. (video 4)

Practise the common words that only use letters and their sounds that have been taught. This increases fluency, but, at the same time, discourages guessing. (video 5)

Check that your child knows the most common sound of all of the single letters before progressing to silent “e” … (video 6)
