Multi-sensory learning in phonics – ai, ay

multi-sensory learning ai ay

A key to learning to read successfully is knowing the vowel sounds. The best way to do this is with multi-sensory learning.

Multi-sensory learning in phonics uses many ways to learn and practise these key areas of knowledge – memory aids, making the letters with hands or body, reading, writing, games …

ai – wait – The “i” runs away and the “a” yells, “Wai…t.” (Video 1)

ay – play – The “y” swings the “a” around in play. (Video 2)

Make “ai” with the hands. Then have the “i” run away and the child yell, “Wai…t.”

Make “ay” with the hands, keep the “y” still and move the “a” behind, around and in front of the “y” … as if the “y” were swinging the “a” around in play.

Make up words with single letter cards and a card with “ay” written on it. (Video 3)

day, trail, quail, stay – Will the dog chase the quail or will it listen to the  boy? (Video 4)

Print and make up the bookmark.  Your child can use it to check any tricky sounds when reading. Each time they learn a new sound, they could draw a coloured line around it. Eventually all of the memory aids would have coloured boxes.   (Video 5)
