The sounds of “ea” and “igh”
Learn the sounds of “ea” and “igh”, two more vowel sounds. If children don’t know vowel sounds like these, it is a common cause of reading difficulties.
ea –The /E/ sound for “ea” in “eat” is much more common than /e/ in “head”.
Make a list of words and divide them into /E/ or /e/ – e.g. sea, tea, heat, seat, team and head, bread, dead, deaf, thread … (Video 1)
Phonic Comic 2/9 and ch – dream, cheap, leak, steam – A comic strip that uses the /E/ sound of “ea”. (Video 2)
igh – A memory aid and action helps children learn each new sound.
Whenever a new sound is learned, make a list of words that use it to practise reading and spelling. Keep adding to the list when your child comes across a new or tricky word with that spelling. E.g. high, light, fight, flight, right, night … (Video 3)
Phonic Comic 2/10 – tight, sight, sigh, bright – A comic strip to practise “igh”.
All children will have experienced the sadness of growing out of a favourite item of clothing and the joy it gives a younger friend or sibling. (Video 4)
