“You” and “are” are very high frequency words, but you don’t need to teach them as “sight words”. By the end of Level 7 in Gilead Success with Phonics, or the free version here at free videos for children, children will be comfortable with “ar” in car or “ar … shark”, and “ou” in out. Teaching “ou” in soup then means that “you” and “are” become straight forward.
Pause the video so children can read each sentence before the loudspeaker button is clicked to check they were right. If necessary, remind them not to guess – use their eyes and work it out.
