Kinaesthetic Letters

Examples of Kinaesthetic Letters – use movement to learn the sounds of letters

Kinaesthetic Letters has been incorporated into the logical, sequential presentation of Gilead Success with Phonics. (It can also still be accessed separately within it.)

Ideas for actions to help remember the sounds of single letters, groups of letters and uppercase letters are given. Use these, or invent your own with your child or children.

“k” – “Kangaroo kicks” – Stand up straight. Hold your elbows in to your body, forearms extended pointing up at 45° to the ground. Pretend to hold a football. Drop the football and kick it with one leg going out to 45° as you say /k/.

Capital “C” – Two ideas are given depending on how athletic children are feeling. Alternatively, they could use the idea from lowercase “c” and just make “C” with their left hand (making sure that it is opening the right way) then stroke the cat with the right hand going in the direction that you would write the letter.

“oo” – Make the shape of two o’s with your hands. For “oo” in “look”, put them to your eyes like binoculars to look through. For “oo” in hoops, move your hands as though hoops are rolling down a hill.
