The Gilead® Success with Reading Program, Part 1 is a suite of interactive computer programs that is largely based on synthetic phonics. This has been shown to be the most successful way to teach children to read. There are many video clips and photos of things that children find interesting. These include Australian native animals, circus performers, performing dolphins and videos from Antarctica, Finland, Germany and Africa. Children’s vocabulary is expanded with words such as scythe, grief, sob, prod … Their meaning is usually obvious from the context. However the whole experience is better if a caring adult can sit with the child and talk about the interesting things they are seeing and learning, and check they understand any unusual words.

The Gilead® Success with Reading Program, Part 2 is designed to engage older students who may have missed some essential skills in reading and/or spelling and allow them to be self-sufficient in improving their skills. It can also be used by younger students with some adult help. Interactive games practise the sounds of ai, ay, ea … ow, ou, oi, oy … th, sh … There are some useful spelling rules. Spelling execises start with common words that sometimes cause difficulty such as when, went, where and were. They build up to words like environment, chromosome, hypothesis, immigration and embarrassment. Many books, games and activities to print give further resources to learn and practise key skills.

Gilead® Success with Phonics contains most of the material from Part 1, some from Part 2 and some new material. Everything is now presented in order, so that a child can just start at the beginning and work through.
