Videos to Teach Reading Level 1_3

How to teach phonics in a way that kids love and learn – engagement.

A key to any successful reading program is engagement. This is a fundamental principle in any teaching.

Phonic Comics 1/3

I have always tried to find video clips or photos of things that children find interesting, including those that extend their knowledge and/or vocabulary. Humour is another way to engage children.

When I was developing the program for “f”, my grandson, who was 3 at the time, asked every time he opened it, “Does the fire engine have a siren?” He was delighted when I finally managed to film one with its siren sounding. He never noticed, or at least he never commented, that it was a different fire engine.

This rabbit had an unusual friend.

If your child is having trouble blending sounds together to make words, say the sounds stretched out as much as you can and joined together. As they get better at it, you can separate the sounds a bit and not stretch them out as much. Always be careful to say /sss/ not /suh/, /fff/ not /fuh/, /rrr/ not /ruh/ … and remember not to use letter names.
