The third sound of letter a = /ar/
By now children should be really familiar with the short sound of letter a in apple and cat, and the name of the letter “a” in apron, wave and plane. If they are not, check Level 1_1 and Level 5_1 before going on. Now we can add in the /ar/ sound of “a” in bath, fast and after. (Video 1)
If you live in a part of the world where this is pronounced as a short /a/ sound, just explain this to your child and try reading the words with the local pronunciation.
Phonic Comic 2/31 – grass, path, masks, fast – What would you do if you met monsters like these? They were really very friendly performers who were just practising in the park. Pause the video each time before the word is said. What is the word? Click play again to check that you got the word right. (Video 2)
Practise the third sound of letter a = /ar/ in as many ways as you can – reading, writing and games/puzzles. Read and spell ask, grass, pass, last, after. Choose between similar words – spa, mast. (Video 3)
