Write a Word
Write a Word has been incorporated into the logical, sequential presentation of Gilead Success with Phonics. (It can also still be accessed separately within it.)
Write a Word teaches children to spell regular 3-letter words. When reading and spelling develop together, they reinforce each other.
- On entering the page you will hear “Enter the word ‘bat’ “.
- Click on any of the large letters on the left to check its sound.
- Click on a letter at the bottom to check what the corresponding uppercase letter looks like and where to find it on the keyboard.
- As you type in the word, you will hear the sound of each letter.
- Click the questionmark to check your answer. If the answer is correct there will be a success sound and video clip of a boy hitting a ball with his bat.
- If the answer is wrong, You will hear the sounds of “b” and then “at” as they go red. Then you will see and hear the correct answer. Delete any wrong letters with “Backspace” or by clicking on the eraser on the screen, then type in the correct answer.

Most programs feature a red rectangle which indicates the object that is selected. It can be moved and activated using two or three large switches connected to the computer via a switch interface which allows a child with a disability that limits movement, such as cerebral palsy, to access it. Other children just ignore the rectangle.

Alternative Write a Word can be accessed using switches and the red rectangle, or other children can just enter letters by clicking on them. No typing is required making it an easier version of Write a Word.

- To check the answer, move the red rectangle to the questionmark and activate it.
- If the answer is correct, you get a video of a jet landing with a parachute to slow it down. Otherwise the letters then word are seen and heard.
