Writing Race

Writing Race has been incorporated into the logical, sequential presentation of Gilead Success with Phonics. (It can also still be accessed separately within it.)

Some children learn best by “doing” – kinaesthetic learners. Also, different ways of learning, learning styles, all support and reinforce each other – seeing, listening, doing, music (rhythm and rhyme), logic …

All children need to learn correct starting points and directions to go when writing letters. This helps prevent problems with b/d confusion. It also helps children make a smooth transition to “joined” writing later.

Sometimes it is hard to get them to practise. In Writing Race, children use the mouse to click on the red circle to start, then follow the coloured circle. When they get to the end, there is a “reward” – a photo, video or animation of something interesting that starts with that letter with its most common sound.

If possible, children should learn the sound of each letter before they learn any letter names. Then the sound becomes what they automatically think of first when they are reading. This makes learning to read much easier and prevents the common problem of confusing letter sounds and names.

The memory rhyme and “the pencil” are the same as in Alphabet Album. The sound of the pencil can be turned off if your child learns different verbal instructions at school.
